What is the story you tell yourself?
One minute do you say you want to achieve x and the next minute turn around and do something that knowingly takes you in the other direction?
Have you had a previous experience with your exercise or nutrition that brings fear when you try a new way of doing it now?
Do you look too far into the future and freak out about the present?
Our past experiences and understanding of the world significantly shape how we behave (now and in the future). We have learnt from these experiences and told ourselves stories to make it easier to respond in the future and to give ourselves simple processes to cope.
It is through these stories and experiences that we can take a complex situation, break down the pieces and successfully get through the day. But it is also these stories and experiences that signal danger to us and prevent us from getting into a dangerous situation.

What if in the past, that experience was a trainer telling you to completely cut carbs from your diet? Then you work with someone else and as soon as changes are implemented you bolt in the other direction and fear falling back into your previous unhealthy relationship with food. Totally understandable.
What if the diet you’re on to achieve weight loss brings you to fear that this is what life will be like forever? Also fair.
On both occasions, however, if the goal you want to achieve requires change (which pretty much everything we want does), then you’re going to have to work through those fears and make some changes.
Those changes don’t need to be cutting every carb and piece of joy from your life though. It can be with more moderation and sustainable habits.
We have a tendency as a nation to go all in. We love an all-or-nothing approach. Honestly, it’s one of the hardest things to work through as a coach, knowing that you can lose weight or change your lifestyle with really bloody small changes that will last a lifetime, rather than a full upheaval of how you do things that may last a month if you’re lucky.

So today, think about the fear and the voices that are holding you back - from anything. Where did they come from? What is the story they are trying to tell you? What are they protecting you from?
