I spend many hours in the week standing in front of a room of people. Time that I could spend feeling like an imposter or timid. I work hard to bring entertainment to classes, but also to coach well and make sure people get better without injury.
It's hard work.
And the thing that holds the balance together?
Having my nails done.
The thing that I’ve realised really helps is feeling like I’m an adult and I look the part. So having my nails done helps me to build this persona. I am the well put together professional at the front of the room.
It’s been so long now since I didn’t have them done that I don’t know what it feels like not to now.
I’ve spoken to clients that have shared this feeling and have similar tricks that make them feel the part and then choose food or exercise that reflects how they want to feel.
Regular manicures or haircuts
Getting clothes out the night before
Writing intentions or affirmations
Putting on a more formal outfit when working from home instead of a PJ day
Some of these things will seem trivial, but they can make a real difference in the care you take for yourself and therefore the consistency of your actions.
Some things, like getting your clothes out the night before can help not only to just be more organised but can help you to decide how you want to behave the next day. At that point, you can decide if you want to be in control if you want to look the part, and consider the other things that may come up and need to be mitigated against.
So I go back to my question. Can I expense my manicure?
I’m sure my accountant will say absolutely not, but I reckon 100% yes!
If there is something that allows you to better live your life or do your job, then why shouldn’t you make it a greater part of your process and principles?
Just because it’s not a course, book or something that is traditionally thought of as professional development doesn’t mean it doesn’t count.
Take a moment each day this week and observe what helps and hinders your success. Do you operate better when you get up at a certain time or if your food is ready in the fridge or if you have the fancy hand cream that makes you feel like a Queen?
They may seem small and seemingly insignificant, but it could be worth factoring them in each week or month to encourage greater success and happiness.
