I had a really good week and I feel great, but…

Amy Gorman

What about next week?

Or if this happens next month?

What about Christmas? That always makes things go to shit

Or my period?

Or this one meeting in 10 weeks' time?

Sound familiar?

Some of these are an exaggeration, but many of us do have a tendency to look too far in advance sometimes and stop ourselves from making progress now.

I’ll often look in advance to things I know will be difficult crunch points. I do it so that I can work on solutions early. Whether that’s moving meetings when I know my period will kick my ass. Or organising my schedule so I only have one Christmas thing a week in December. Or scheduling in more prep time for the meeting that I’m nervous about in 10 weeks.

Looking ahead and only finding problems doesn’t help anyone. It can feel paralyzing.

It causes you to live in worry, so you can’t do the things you want to now, or live in the present moment and just enjoy life.

I’m going to keep today’s writing short and ask you simply to think about the following:

  • What do I need to do right now?

  • What will help me be better today?

Got it?

Cool, get on with it.

Don’t think about steps two and three, tomorrow or next week. Just take the simple, small, single steps.

Now, go.
