Seeing life from a different perspective

Amy Gorman

Whilst the world is trying to work out how to heal and make everything better, it is up to us to stay at home, stay healthy and remain as positive as we are able.

I have had so many conversations recently with people saying “oh my god such and such did this and it is really doing my head in”.

Every time it has prompted me to think and respond, “would they have done this before now?”, “would it have annoyed you then?”, “why do you think they did that?”

Most of the time the response is “yes, they normally did this it just seems worse now”.

Each of us has our own way of dealing with life and responding to uncertainty. Nobody responds in the same way, no approach is good / bad / more superior. We are only human and it is in our nature, especially right now to rebel against our circumstance, to do things that make us feel better or in control.

For the most part, our behaviour now is the same as normal, but may be enhanced to the best version or the worst version on a sliding scale.

What can we do just now to deal with family, flatmates, friends that we’re constantly surrounded by?

  1. Breathe

  2. Take a moment – either a moment out in the day for ourselves, or before we respond to whatever has irritated us

  3. Remember that we are all in this together

  4. But none of us has ever been through this before

  5. There is no right or wrong way to deal with life and its unpredictability

  6. Be open, talk, listen. Really listen

  7. Don’t take it personally (whatever ‘it’ is to you)

  8. Breathe

  9. Be kind. To yourself and to others

  10. Get good sleep and eat good food

  11. Breathe

The moments in the day that I find greatest peace and joy right now are when I’m either listening to my audio book and drinking coffee, or getting upside down (heck, the world doesn’t know what direction it’s facing, why should I be upright?!). These things are helping me to take those moments and appreciate what I have over what I don’t.

If something makes me happy. I’m going to do more of it. If it doesn’t, I’m going to do a lot less of it (more on that in the next few days – with as much of a positive spin as I can create).

Also note: if you’re not feeling ok, that is absolutely ok!

It is ok to tell someone to $%&# off for trying to be positive. Me included.

You don’t have to be and you don’t have to pretend to be. Consider reaching out to someone: a friend, family, me, whoever. We may not be allowed out, but we can still reach out virtually. Or find a pen pal…
