Life has a way of steering us down paths we never expect. For me, Amy, a former marketer, my compass swung from boardrooms to barbells as I embraced the transformative world of fitness and nutrition. My co-host Kieran's journey is equally compelling; what started as training friends in his garage gym catapulted him towards a nine-year tenure as a seasoned CrossFit Level 3 coach.

Together, we're peeling back the curtain on these personal evolutions to show you how making that leap can redefine your life and health.

Empower Fitness and Nutrition Podcast Introduction

This chapter introduces us, Kieran and Amy, and the journey that led us to create Empower Fitness and Nutrition. I, Amy, share my transition from a career in marketing and events to a passion for coaching and nutrition, highlighting the decision-making process that led to this change and the impact it's had on my life and others. We discuss the significance of understanding the everyday challenges of people with office jobs, as it relates to my own experience working long hours at a desk before moving into the fitness and nutrition industry. Additionally, we touch on the diversity of clients I've coached, from office workers to friends and family, and how these experiences have enriched my approach to nutrition and fitness coaching.

(07:03) From Garage to Coaching

This chapter reflects on my journey from starting a humble garage gym to becoming a CrossFit Level 3 coach with nine years of experience. I share how I began coaching people for free while in college, my initial hesitance to become a personal trainer, and the growth of my gym space from a small area in my garage to a fully equipped facility. I discuss my experience playing rugby, engaging in sports science, and the shift from individual coaching to group sessions. I also touch on my personal challenges with building muscle, the approach to nutrition without force-feeding, and the value of a lifestyle approach to fitness. Additionally, I reminisce about hosting a previous podcast and writing e-books that focused on fitness, nutrition, and lifestyle changes.

(14:44) Balance and Well-Being in Fitness

This chapter explores the balance between training for performance and incorporating fitness as a fun, meaningful part of a well-rounded life. We discuss how the people we work with might participate in high-intensity events like triathlons or CrossFit competitions, not as professionals but as a way to test their training and set goals. I highlight the importance of actionable advice, offering listeners clear guidance on prioritizing aspects of their fitness journey. We emphasize that while the hour spent training is crucial for mental health and a sense of achievement, the rest of the day's actions are equally significant. Nutrition and lifestyle choices outside the gym have a profound impact on energy levels, mood, and physical appearance. Sharing experiences from coaching clients like Shanaid, we illustrate how finding balance in all aspects of life can lead to profound personal improvements and why simplifying the approach to health can lead to feeling good without unnecessary stress.

(18:44) Empowering People Through Nutrition and Fitness

This chapter explores the concept of empowerment through nutrition and strength training, with personal anecdotes highlighting the transformative impact on individuals like my mother and clients such as Shanaid and Emily. I share how, by teaching the importance of nutrition, exercise, and sleep, and understanding the complexities of women's health from hormones to menopause, we can help women realize their strength and capability. The story of getting Emily to breathe and then perform her heaviest deadlift exemplifies how physical strength can translate into the confidence to tackle life's challenges. I discuss the overarching goal of our podcast, which is to equip our listeners with the knowledge and confidence to handle whatever comes their way and to feel their best selves, whether that's through making smart food choices, prioritizing rest, or finding their own form of movement that brings them joy.

(25:59) Empower Fitness and Nutrition Approach

This chapter we explore the concept of quality of life through the lens of fitness and nutrition, emphasizing that the goal of our coaching is not merely to prepare for a stage but to enhance one's ability to enjoy life to the fullest. I discuss our approach of integrating small, manageable habits rather than drastic lifestyle overhauls, ensuring the journey towards better health is not a miserable one. We touch on the importance of starting with simple steps, such as adding more vegetables to your plate, and the significance of making health and muscle building accessible and affordable, highlighting options like organ meats for non-vegetarians and alternatives for vegetarians. I also share insights into the practical aspects of our coaching, like assisting with shopping choices, to make the process of improving nutrition as straightforward and sustainable as possible. Throughout this chapter, we aim to equip our listeners with actionable advice to foster a healthier, more empowered life.
